This is the second book featuring NYC Detective Michael Bennett. Mike is a widower with 10 adopted kids from 4 to 14 and he is trying to keep the home together with the help of a young Irish relative and help from his grandfather Father Seamus Bennett. There is someone going around the city seemingly randomly killing people in broad daylight and Mike has his hands full leasing the task force to catch the killer and his kids are all coming with a nasty stomach virus that has him and Mary Catherine running short of sleep. I am going to leave the rest for you to find out by reading about it yourselves. Next to Alex, I like this new character best.

Orson Scott Card - Empire - Finished - 2/7/2009
A what if book taking of on the current polarization of the far left and right of the political spectrum. An unknown group makes a successful attempt on the President by rocket fire into the White House, killing the President and much of his cabinet while at the same time the VP is killed in an automobile accident. Within a day New York is taken over by an a group calling itself the Progressive Restoration party and armed with futuristic weaponry. What follows is the story of a small group, who with the backing of the interim President try to bring an end to a growing civil war as states legislatures sign on to the Progressive cause. Good tale, kept me reading to the end and put some interesting and scary ideas.
